Storyville Reaches Milestone:
Wednesday,
September 10 turned out to be an especially lucky day for 5-year-old Cia,
who visits Rosedale Library’s Storyville frequently with her mom. That day
the popular interactive literacy center designed for children 5 years old
and younger with adults was geared up to welcome its 50,000th visitor since
opening in February 2008. Cia became the recipient of a $50 bond presented
in celebration of Storyville having reached this milestone.

Hereford’s 20th: Three Generations Celebrate
Hereford Library’s
existence provides proof positive that the voice of the people makes a
difference. When several local residents rallied the community to “shout
out” for a library in Hereford, County Executive Dennis Rasmussen and other
county officials were listening. A few years later in October 1988,
champions for the library including Bill Hughes and Rose Dykes were
attending a ribbon-cutting ceremony that heralded the library’s opening on
York Road. Bill and members of Rose’s family (Rose died a few years ago),
along with volunteers and staff from the past and present, attended the
library’s 20th birthday party held this October to celebrate the branch’s
founding and growth in space and services.
Rose Dykes’ daughter, grandson and great-great grandson at Hereford
Library’s 20th birthday celebration: Rose Dykes’ grandson James Blevins,
left, father of Jennie (shown in the old newspaper checking out the first
book when Hereford Library opened October 3, 1988), holds his grandson
(Jennie’s son who is Rose’s great-great grandson) while standing next to his
mom Jeanne Dykes Bowman, who is Rose’s daughter.
Catching the Reading Bug
Thousands of children and youth had fun this summer while they feverishly
“caught the reading bug” in BCPL’s eight-week program of special activities.
Beginning in 1999, the desire to show off a winner’s trophy in their school
for a year has revved up stiff competition in Summer Reading Club
participation. Hats off to the 10 public and two private schools in
Baltimore County that were this year’s trophy winners based on enrollment by
region:
-
Elementary schools: Prettyboy in the Central area (Hereford); Red House Run
in the Northeast (Rosedale); Chatsworth in the Northwest (Reisterstown);
Colgate in the Southeast (North Point); and Relay in the Southwest
(Arbutus).
-
Middle schools: Ridgely in the Central area (Cockeysville); Perry Hall in
the Northeast (Perry Hall); Sudbrook in the Northwest (Pikesville); Dundalk
in the Southeast (North Point); and Lansdowne in the Southwest (Arbutus).
- Among private schools with enrollment up to 299 was
Our Lady of Grace School (Hereford) and St. Clement Mary Hofbauer (Rosedale)
with enrollment of 300 and over.
|

For the third consecutive year, Perry Hall Middle School captured the
coveted Summer Reading trophy, thanks largely to enthusiastic efforts by the school
corps of 20 volunteers. |

Sixth grader Rachel and her sister fourth grader Sarah,
students at Halethorpe’s Ascension School, love the addition of the new,
plushy child-sized chair and sofa to sit on while they read during frequent
visits to the Arbutus Library. |
|

One Summer Reading teen winner of an iPod nano was 13-year-old Perry
Hall Middle School eighth grader Michelle C., posing with the prize she
won in Perry Hall Library’s drawing for program participants with branch
Summer Reading coordinator Ms. Gnau. Every branch had a children’s
winner, who chose a bike, tennis racket, snowboard or pogo stick from
Princeton Sports. |

Lucky 12-year-old Keith A. from Essex got to represent BCPL when
Maryland’s 2008 Summer Reading participants were honored at an Orioles pregame field ceremony in August. Keith receives an Orioles hat from right
fielder Nick Markakis and a pat on the back by The Bird. |
